Jane State of Survival

Jane Goldshot

The light streaming through the window woke Jane Goldshot. Although it's only sunrise, she leaps out of bed because sunrise means she's running late. Life on the ranch begins before dawn and ends long after sunset. Jane anticipates being teased by her brothers all day for oversleeping.

As she hurriedly tries to put on her shirt and pants simultaneously, she trips over her pant leg and falls face-first onto the floor beside her bed. Lying there, she chuckles at her own clumsiness and notices a box in the dust beneath her bed. She finishes dressing, then retrieves the box, opens it, and begins to smile.

Inside are several photos spanning from her early childhood to the present, featuring her brothers, parents, and herself. Though they occasionally tease her, she knows it's out of love, and being the only girl among six children has taught her to speak her mind and not fear judgment. Jane picks up a photo of her with her brothers and parents, taken after she won their family contest for the fastest revolver draw—Jane always won, naturally.

She slips the photo into the back pocket of her jeans and descends the stairs, exiting through the front door, which emits a screech as it closes behind her. From the porch, she notices one of her older brothers in the distance, attempting to tame their new mare. The absence of the family truck in the driveway indicates that one or more family members are in town.

Jane begins her walk toward the stable, listening to the crunch of gravel beneath her boots and the horses neighing for their delayed breakfast. They can be quite stubborn, demanding their meals at the same time each day. Today, Jane is late, and they are clearly displeased. The day unfolds like most others, dedicated to ranch duties and all that they involve. Long after sunset, she lays her head on her pillow, anticipating a similar routine the following day. However, no subsequent day would ever be the same again.

The next day begins similarly, but this morning she's not late; she rises before sunrise and heads downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast. Everyone except her two oldest brothers, who had already moved out, is seated there, listening to the news on the radio while eating. The ranch is mostly shielded from global issues, only being affected if troubles arise in the nearest town or on the road there.

The news reported that everyone should remain indoors and avoid larger towns due to a new drug causing panic in major cities. This didn't significantly alter their routine, except they skipped going into town for errands that day. As the sun began to set, significant changes had already occurred in the world. The news had stopped broadcasting, leaving only automated military messages warning about people attacking others, or as they termed it, the infected consuming humans.

Jane and her family sat on the front porch as if nothing had changed when their neighbour Luke approached them across the field. His walk appeared increasingly strange as he got closer. Her father stood up to greet Luke, and somehow Jane sensed it was a grave mistake; she felt it deep inside but was unable to move as her muscles wouldn't respond.

She watched in horror as Luke lunged at her father, biting into his neck. Her mother's screams and the sound of her rushing footsteps snapped Jane out of her paralysis, and she and her brothers screamed and began running toward their mother, who had also fallen victim to their neighbor.

In the distance, she heard her name being called, but she awoke to Maddie looking at her, wondering if she was alright. Jane nodded, and Maddie continued to look at her, unsure if she was being truthful, while petting Frank's head. Jane met Maddie's grey-blue eyes, "I'm sure, I'm okay. I was just wandering down memory lane."

She remained seated with her back against a tree, facing the hills, where she had seen some wild horses in the distance, which had triggered memories of the days before the outbreak. Jane took the photo from her jeans pocket; she always carried it with her now, as it helped her continue in this world, with the hope of seeing her brothers again.
