Nanami
Nanami was always different from the girls her age. She never cared for beauty products, makeup, or fashion. If she wasn't playing sports with the boys, you could probably find her up in a tree somewhere. But her family didn't mind at all - they loved her for being true to herself.
In fact, they even suggested she try Kendo, a cool modern Japanese martial art that's all about mastering the way of the sword.
Nanami and her family found refuge in an abandoned house at the edge of a cosy little town. She held tightly onto the sword her father had given her at the start of the outbreak, admiring a painting of a Sakura tree with its vibrant colours.
The aroma of tomatoes, basil, and mushrooms being cooked over a fire wafted through the air. Her mother was whipping up their usual soup, the same one they had enjoyed just a week ago. Nanami didn't mind though, as the soup was still tasty and comforting on her hungry stomach.

Her father, hunched over the dining table, was deeply focused on a map spread out before him. He was brainstorming a plan to connect with other survivors.
Outside, the only sounds Nanami could hear were the gentle chirping of crickets in the distance, punctuated by the occasional clank of her father's movements and the stirring of soup.
She appreciated the quietness and always had. As she watched her father's furrowed brow, she felt a strong desire to help more than she was permitted. Yet, in their eyes, she was still their little girl.
As they gathered for dinner, her father announced, "Tomorrow morning, we will head south. I believe we might find a settlement there." Everyone at the table nodded in agreement.

The next morning arrived, and as the sun rose on the horizon, its light peeked through one of the upper windows. After gathering their supplies, they ventured outside, keeping a close eye on their surroundings for any potential danger. The street was quiet, indicating that the infected had likely moved on to busier areas.
As they walked, a noise from the nearby alley caught their attention, causing them to halt in their tracks. Nanami instinctively tightened her grip on her sword, preparing for a possible threat. With her heart racing, she scanned the area where the sound had originated, ready to defend herself.
To their surprise, a cat suddenly emerged from one of the dumpsters, meowing loudly. Nanami slowly lowered her sword and crouched down, while her family watched in silence, understanding that it was best not to argue. The little black and orange cat ran out from the alley, seeking human interaction.
As the cat rubbed against Nanami's hand, it was clear that it was in need of love and care. The family couldn't resist its charm and welcomed the feline into their group, grateful for the unexpected but heartwarming encounter.
"Can we bring it along?" Nanami asked, looking up at her parents who were silently communicating with each other.
"Have you thought about how we'll take care of it, how we'll transport it?" her father questioned, with her mother nodding in agreement.
"If you can figure out a plan, then yes, you can bring it with us!" they replied with a smile.

Nanami glanced around at the shops lining the street, hoping to spot a pet store or something useful. Her eyes landed on a store displaying bags and backpacks in the window. If she had a backpack, she could easily carry her beloved cat until they found a place to stock up on supplies.
Stepping into the shop, Nanami was suddenly faced with an infected individual rushing towards her. Without hesitation, she unsheathed her sword and swiftly dealt with the threat. She quickly checked on her family and looked for her cat, only to realize that the feline had bolted when the infected had appeared.
Deciding against picking up a backpack, Nanami realized it would just be an extra burden now. They ventured on, eventually reaching a city. However, their relief was short-lived as they encountered a swarm of infected upon entering the city limits. Realizing they couldn't take on so many, they had no choice but to flee. In the chaos, they got separated and ran in different directions.
Nanami searched tirelessly for her family, holding onto the hope that they were safe somewhere. Sadly, she couldn't find any signs of their whereabouts. After months of searching on her own, she stumbled upon The Final Hope settlement. There, she found companionship and a sense of belonging.
Even though she's found a new home and friends, Nanami continues to hold onto the belief that one day she'll be reunited with her family.
